Fuchsias

Fuchsia blooms – like ballerinas

in tutus, dancing all day long

as soon as there’s the slightest breeze

or when a high wind comes along.

A corps de ballet on each bush,

a mass of dancers – heavenly!

They’re always great performers, fuchsias,

and get a huge encore from me.

Fuchsias, artistes, ballet stars –

more lovely than most plants I know.

On breezy days I step outside

and then sit back and watch the show.

The language of flowers

When entertaining Orientals,

be careful when arranging flowers.

Lots of Eastern folk are mystics

and think that flowers have special powers.

Some flowers say ‘Welcome’, others don’t,

and how they’re placed and what you choose

can send out different messages

depending on their shapes and hues.

You go outside and pick some flowers

while picturing a nice arrangement.

Beware, without a bit of care

your vase might lead to long estrangement.

They step inside, they see your vase,

and not long after, they’ve departed.

You ask yourself, ’What have I done?’

and that’s before the evening’s started.

Some plants suggest an ancient grievance

and several may offend their eyes,

or even prompt deep gasps of shock

suggesting someone’s swift demise.

You go and pick a bunch of flowers

and pop them in a vase or pot,

while thinking it will welcome them.

The chances are that it may not.
